Wrap Up; social networks and catch up

I liked the idea of the Scotland Council using Facebook to encouage people to get more involved with their library. I could see more Libraries putting themselves on a social networking site to get more people envolved with running different programmes.
I have learnt so much in the past 12 weeks and I hope to be able to pass on some of the sites to our customers.
Thanks to State Library for allowing me to do this and a huge thankyou to Kristin for showing me the way.

Online applications and tools

What a great idea. All of the free applications that are available will make accessing computers more affordable for everyone. Google Doc is a brilliant idea, user friendly. I could imagine myself using this when I travel instead of writing a diary.I would highly recommend this programme for the public to use in the library if they don't have a flashdrive.

Mashups

What a great idea.I had a great look around and I have heaps of ideas for myself on how to use this. Great gift ideas for something personal.

For the library you could use this to make great posters or jigsaws for the kiddies for storytime crafts.

Podcasts and Audio

Using podcasts in the library would be a great way for schools to gather information about reference books available for their assignments.
If your library was in a tourist area and of any historical significance eg. State Library, you could have an audio tour for visitors. Visiting authors could also use this at book launches for people who could not make it, with question and answers recorded and given to customers.
For the work place, you could have important meetings that you may not be able to attend, recorded for their use at a later date.
To be able to record an interview that you couldn't listen to and have it for later would be great.

Answer Boards

I started with such gusto about this section but came to a CRASHING hault when I started searching one of the questions "Do Turtles Have Knees?" and my computer was infected with a virus(not impressed).
Students who could access these sites would benefit well with Librarians offering their own experience and knowledge to their questions.
The area where I live is very reliant on tourism,so I think our Shire Council would benfit with a service like this. We could have locals answer questions about our area eg.where to camp, fish, local attractions, also other visitors could offer their experiences.
I think these Answer Boards are a great idea especially for students who may be stumped on certain questions.

P.S. Do turtles have knees?

Tagging Del.icio.us

I think the concept of reading other peoples blogs and seeing what their favorite webpages are was a great idea. I like the idea of Del.icio.us where you can post your own sites for your own access, especially if you travel.
For research value, it would be brilliant for new researchers to see what sites other and more experience researchers have used for their research.

Library Thing is a great idea. I like the idea of other people posting what they thought of a book. A great idea for a Book Club.

Videos Online

Well what a productive day I have had. I found a video in 2 minutes and proceeded to spent 2 more hours looking at different clips(with alot of laughs). Are people serious when they do this stuff.I have stayed with a cat theme for my video. I hope you all enjoy it.
I love the idea that you can share special (and not so special) moments with other people, but again I have the problem with people posting videos that you may not be aware of.
Using a video link on your Library Blog would be a great way to make your library more personal to the public. You could show how to research family history, video a story time (with parents consent) or a holiday activity.

Wikis

I have looked at Mint Museums and found it very interesting. I thought the main page had an excellent profile and invited me to look at more of the links it offered.

Book Lovers Wiki was ideal for me to see what other readers thought of books that I may have read and what they thought of them(agree or disagree it's all personal taste).

Montana History Wiki is a great way for children to learn about the history of their area especially with the quick links.

Applications that could work well in Libraries might be a Book Club, inviting readers to have their say. Services that are availble to the public and when they are available, and public recommendations of services that they might enjoy

RSS

I have just subscribed to six RSS feeds.I selected Powerhouse Museum and enjoyed all the photos available on the site.
I also selected CatDogWebsite Syndication to help understand how to look after my pets and get updates on different problems that may arise with them.
Cass Down Under I had hoped would give me some insight on an overseas visitor and what they thought of our country and our way of life(I was very dissapointed with the information she posted knowing the time and effort to set up a Blog).
Travel Happy was a fun way to learn about other travellers and their experiences to different countries.
Hill Shire Times helped me with understanding partner sites. I think the credit card might get an outing on one of the sites.
Flinders University Library was a great way for all to understand how the RSS site can be used in the library.

Sharing Images

I thought Flickr was great. I had a great time searching for photos and was amazed on the quality of work. My only problem with this format is anything may be put on this site without the permission of the subject.

I had a indepth conversation with my boss about the ways Flickr could be used in the library, with historical photos this would be a great way to store you collection cheaply and a source for all to view, but again I have the problem of people in the photos not being aware of them being used.

This photo was a reminder of my last cat,fat and lazy but still cute..

Ducks Despair

Help
Not a computer whiz. Most 2 year old's would know more than I.
I hope to learn anything other than using Google. I hope to be more confident using computer applications and hope to pass these on to our customers who may request them.
I am constantly amazed when our "Life Long Learners" come in to use the public computers and what they use them for (teaching young dogs new tricks).
Once I have finish creating my masterpiece I will venture into cyberspace and checkout different blogs to see if I'm learning anything. I have looked at Riverina Regional Library's blog and was very impressed with it's information available to the public.
